A monument to John Howard Payne stands in Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown, where the author of "Home, Sweet Home" was reinterred in 1883, decades after he died in Tunis. Payne wrote the lyrics for the song in 1823 for the opera *Clari*, and it became one of the most widely sung songs of the nineteenth century. This glass negative, made by the National Photo Company around 1920 to 1921, records the memorial as the firm documented Washington's sites in that period. Streaks and other blemishes on the plate come from the natural deterioration of its original coatings.
