A bronze memorial to James A. Garfield, the 20th president, stands at the center of this view. Garfield was shot in 1881 and died within months, and his death helped drive the passage of civil service reform in 1883. The record marks the location as unverified, so the exact site is uncertain, though the subject is clearly a Garfield monument in the capital. The glass negative came from the National Photo Company, a firm that documented Washington landmarks for souvenir views in the early twentieth century, and it is dated to about 1921 to 1922. Streaks and surface blemishes from aging are visible, so the image may look softer than a clean copy.
