The bronze statue at the center of Thomas Circle honors George H. Thomas, the Virginia-born Union general known as the "Rock of Chickamauga" for holding his ground during the Civil War. The circle was one of the busy intersections of the growing capital, and this glass negative shows the monument at a time when automobiles were becoming a regular sight on Washington's streets in the early 1920s. The National Photo Company, which worked in the city from about 1906 to 1932, produced views like this one for visitors and tourists. The title comes from the company's own notes and has not been independently verified, but the subject is clear.
