Few statues in the capital have been photographed as often as the equestrian George Washington at Washington Circle, where the bronze stands at the busy junction of New Hampshire and Pennsylvania avenues. This glass negative, made by the National Photo Company in the early 1920s, records the monument as the city's traffic was growing. The company's photographers worked across Washington for roughly three decades, producing views for postcards and publications, so pictures like this one document the streetscape as much as the sculpture. The statue, designed by Clark Mills and placed here in 1860, is among the earliest equestrian monuments in the United States.
