The Lafayette statue is the detail that sets this glass negative apart: it records the equestrian monument to the Marquis de Lafayette that stands in Lafayette Square, just north of the White House. The statue was a gift from France, unveiled in 1891, and its sculptor, Paul Wayland Bartlett, modeled the French general on horseback with a figure of an American soldier at his side. Taken between 1910 and 1920 by the National Photo Company, the image captures the square as a busy civic space in the years when Washington was growing quickly. The glass plate shows some streaks and surface blemishes from age, which are typical of negatives of this era.
