Sheridan Circle, along Massachusetts Avenue, holds an equestrian statue of Philip Henry Sheridan, the Union cavalry general whose ride to the front at Cedar Creek became a celebrated Civil War story. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum made the bronze, which was dedicated in 1908, so this view was taken a few years after the monument went up. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed Washington landmarks for sale to visitors, likely made the negative. Its streaks and blemishes come from the age of the glass plate and its coating, which is typical of negatives from this era.
