Few statues in the capital are as recognizable as the bronze Andrew Jackson that rears over Lafayette Square, across from the White House. Clark Mills unveiled the equestrian monument in 1853, and its horse, balanced on its hind legs and tail, was a celebrated feat of casting. This view dates from roughly 1910 to 1925, when the square was a busy stop for visitors and the National Photo Company was recording the city's landmarks. The glass negative shows the streaks and blemishes that come with aging coatings, which add a faint texture to the scene.
