This view shows the Longfellow statue in Washington, D.C., a bronze memorial to the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, whose verse about the American past and everyday life made him one of the most widely read writers of the nineteenth century. Commemorative statues like this one were a common feature of the capital's streets and parks in the early twentieth century, when civic groups and the federal government placed many monuments to writers, statesmen and soldiers. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed the city's landmarks and sold views of them to visitors. Its glass negative shows the surface streaking that often appears as these early coatings age.
