The seated marble figure of Abraham Lincoln in the memorial's central chamber is the subject of this view, taken as the building neared completion. Sculptor Daniel Chester French designed the statue, which the Piccirilli Brothers carved in sections from white Georgia marble before it was installed for the memorial's dedication in 1922. The National Photo Company, which recorded Washington streets, monuments and government buildings in the early twentieth century, made the image as a large glass negative, a format that holds fine detail in stone.
