A Wescott coupe parked in front of the Lincoln Memorial sets this picture apart from the many views of the monument on the board. The memorial was finished around 1920 and dedicated in 1922, so the photograph was taken as the building was new and the surrounding grounds were still taking shape. Wescott was a short-lived American automobile maker, and the car's presence shows how quickly motor travel was reaching the capital. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington for decades, made the image on a glass negative, and the faint streaks on the plate are signs of age in its original coating.
