Before its dedication, the Lincoln Memorial rose on the edge of the Potomac as a scaffolded marble work site, and this negative records that unfinished stage. The cornerstone was laid in 1915, and the building was not dedicated until 1922, so the picture falls within the long middle years of construction. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that sold views of the capital to visitors, produced many such images for postcards and souvenir albums. The streaks and small blemishes on the glass come from the gradual breakdown of its original coating.
