Few sights in the National Photo Company collection capture a federal monument at its start, but this glass negative shows the Lincoln Memorial at its cornerstone laying. The ceremony took place in Washington in February 1914, several years before architect Henry Bacon's marble temple was finished and dedicated in 1922. The National Photo Company documented the capital's public life in these years, and the plate's surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural decay of its original coating.
