Unlike most views of the Lincoln Memorial, this glass negative records the site around 1916 to 1917, while the marble temple was still under construction on the reclaimed land beside the Potomac. The memorial was not dedicated until 1922, so the scene shows a place most visitors never saw in this state. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital's streets and buildings in the early twentieth century, made the negative. Its streaks and blemishes come from age and deterioration of the original coatings, and the title naming a National Delivery Association is the studio's own unverified notation.
