Few monuments in Washington changed as dramatically in these years as the Lincoln Memorial, whose marble temple rose on the edge of the Potomac. Construction began in 1914 and the building was not completed until 1920, so a view dated to the 1910s likely shows the memorial during its long build. The National Photo Company photographed the capital extensively and sold its views to tourists, making these glass negatives a valuable record of the city. Streaks and clouding on the plate come from the natural deterioration of its original coating, which is part of what the negative shows about its age.
