Few American monuments are as recognizable as the Lincoln Memorial, and this negative shows it during construction, when its Greek-temple colonnade was still rising beside the Potomac. Work began in 1914 under architect Henry Bacon, and the seated figure of Lincoln by sculptor Daniel Chester French was carved in marble before the memorial was dedicated in 1922. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that made many views of the capital, produced glass negatives like this one, and the streaks and blemishes on this example likely come from age in the original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
