A Christmas tree stands inside Garfield Hospital, a Washington institution named for President James A. Garfield, who was shot in 1881 and died that September. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital's streets, buildings and institutions from about 1907 to 1932, made the picture, and its record dates it to roughly 1921 to 1922. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coatings, which gives the holiday scene an unplanned, weathered texture.
