Labeled as an army hospital near Washington, D.C., this view takes its title from information the National Photo Company wrote on the negative, and that attribution has not been verified. Between 1861 and 1865 the Union army operated dozens of hospitals in and around the capital, many of them rows of wood and canvas wards that filled as the wounded arrived from fighting in Virginia and Maryland. The picture survives as an 8 by 6 inch glass copy negative, and its streaks and blemishes come from deterioration in the original coatings.
