The Peace Monument, a sculpted memorial to the sailors and Marines who died in the Civil War, stands near the Capitol in this glass negative. The National Photo Company made many views of Washington's landmarks for commercial sale in the early twentieth century, and its catalog dates this plate to about 1921 to 1922, when the city was filling with new automobiles and visitors. The glass has streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which give the image a faint, uneven texture.
