Statuary Hall, the chamber in the Capitol where states once placed statues of their most honored citizens, is the setting for this glass negative, which dates to roughly 1920 to 1921. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the city and its landmarks in the early twentieth century, made the image, and the negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the slow decay of the original coating, a reminder of how fragile these glass plates are. The room itself, once the House chamber, still holds the statues today.
