Two marble statues flank the entrance here, one labeled for John Stark and the other for Daniel Webster, both representing New Hampshire in the Capitol's Statuary Hall. Congress created the hall in 1864 when it converted the old House chamber into a gallery where each state could honor two of its notable citizens, and states gradually filled it with figures chosen for their public service. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative around 1900 to 1910, was a commercial firm known for documenting American cities and landmarks, so this view captures the hall as visitors of that era would have seen it.
