A February 1808 design for the lobbies of the Hall of Representatives in the south wing of the Capitol, this drawing shows decorative wall covering planned for a space that was still being finished. The House had moved into its south wing chamber only a year earlier, and the building's architect, Benjamin Latrobe, was supervising interior work through his office. The inscription credits William J. Lenthall, the office's surveyor, whose staff prepared such plans. Because the British burned the Capitol in 1814, this early scheme records interiors that were soon lost and later rebuilt.
