This drawing is a design for decorating the lobbies of the Hall of Representatives in the south wing of the Capitol, the chamber where the House met from 1807 until the early 1850s. Its inscription credits William Lenthall, the surveyor of the public buildings, and dates the design to February 18, 1808. The work was made in watercolor, ink, wash, and graphite, so it shows both the layout of the walls and the colors and finishes the planners had in mind. Only a few years later, the British burned the Capitol in 1814, so drawings like this one record a building that was soon heavily altered.
