The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its color and black-and-white views of American places, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative of the United States Capitol between roughly 1905 and 1915. The record ties it to catalog number 039980 and to a jacket title that places the building in Washington, D.C. Around those years the Capitol was the working seat of Congress, and its dome, completed in 1866 under Thomas Ustick Walter's design, stood as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the country. Large glass negatives like this one were prized for the fine detail they captured in the building's stonework and ornament.
