Taken from the north, this view shows the broad north front of the U.S. Capitol and the cast-iron dome that Thomas U. Walter designed, completed in 1866 shortly after the Civil War. The 8-by-10-inch glass plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large catalog of American scenery and city views sold to travelers and publishers in the early 1900s. The record notes that the negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, which shows how widely these commercial plates circulated. Views like this one document the building as it appeared in the years before the city changed much around it.
