The vestibule and colonnade of the Capitol's north wing, the section that housed the Senate, are the focus of this drawing, which Benjamin Henry Latrobe prepared sometime between 1815 and 1817. Those years followed the British burning of the Capitol in 1814, when Latrobe, who had been supervising the building since 1803, took on the work of restoring and redesigning the damaged interiors. The careful combination of ink, watercolor, wash, and graphite shows how he worked out both structure and surface decoration before construction. The drawing is part of the Latrobe Archive at the Library of Congress, and it offers a useful record of the building as he planned it during reconstruction.
