The drawing shows a section of the vestibule and colonnade in the north wing of the United States Capitol, the part of the building that Benjamin Henry Latrobe was rebuilding after British troops set fire to the Capitol in August 1814. Latrobe, the architect who had served as Surveyor of the Public Buildings, worked on the north wing between roughly 1815 and 1817, and his sheets like this one record how he meant the rebuilt interior to read. The ink, watercolor, and graphite rendering was made as part of his working archive, so the drawing shows both design intent and the structural logic behind the spaces.
