Few drawings capture the Capitol's early construction as directly as this study of the north wing's vestibule and colonnade. It is an ink, watercolor, wash, and graphite drawing made between 1815 and 1817, when Benjamin Henry Latrobe was supervising the rebuilding of the building after the British burned it in 1814. Latrobe, the architect who also shaped the Capitol's interior under earlier commissions, worked out the arcade and colonnade details in drawings like this one, and the inscription on the sheet identifies the north wing plan it belongs to. The sheet is part of Latrobe's papers at the Library of Congress.
