Cut east to west and viewed toward the north, this section shows the interior of the North Wing of the Capitol as Benjamin Henry Latrobe planned its rebuilding. British forces set fire to the Capitol in August 1814 during the War of 1812, and the North Wing, which held the Senate chamber, suffered heavy damage. Latrobe, the building's architect, made this ink and wash drawing between about 1815 and 1817 to guide the restoration of its interior spaces. Anyone studying how the Capitol was reconstructed after the war will find it a valuable record of that work.
