This cross-section cuts through the north wing of the United States Capitol and looks northward, rendered in ink, watercolor, and graphite. Benjamin Henry Latrobe drew it between 1815 and 1817, while the building was being rebuilt after British troops set fire to it in August 1814. The north wing housed the Senate chamber, so the sheet records the interior spaces and structure where that body would resume its work. Latrobe's sectional views were meant to guide builders, and they still show how the rebuilt wing was intended to look.
