Few drawings show the early Library of Congress as directly as this one, which Benjamin Henry Latrobe began on November 18, 1808, while serving as Surveyor of the Public Buildings. The sheet pairs a section running from south to north with plans of the lowest floor beneath the gallery and of the ground story, and a note on the back calls the scheme an Egyptian design. The room it describes was lost when British troops set fire to the Capitol in 1814.
