This drawing is a watercolor, wash, and ink plan and section of the roof of the north wing of the United States Capitol, labeled as "proposed alterations" and addressed to William Lenthall, the clerk of works. It belongs to the Benjamin Henry Latrobe Archive, and Latrobe, who served as the Capitol's architect from 1803, drew it in the years before the building's north wing was damaged in the British attack of August 1814. The sheet shows how Latrobe planned to reshape the roof, with sections through the central domes and the gutters, where drainage was a persistent problem in the building. Its careful layered washes make it a useful record of how the Capitol was designed and revised during its early construction.
