This view looks at the west front of the United States Capitol, the side that faces the National Mall rather than the eastern approach that visitors usually picture. The picture dates from between 1910 and 1920 and was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities, landscapes and monuments and sold the views to travelers and publishers. It survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, the original working plate from which prints were made. The Library of Congress received it in 1949 as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
