This drawing shows the west front of the United States Capitol with its high dome, the tall cast-iron dome completed in the 1860s. The back of the sheet is inscribed "Thornton's Plan West Elevation," which ties the work to William Thornton, the physician and amateur architect whose 1793 design won the competition for the building. The pen, watercolor, and graphite rendering reflects the conventions of late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century architectural drawing, when a wash of color helped clients picture a building's façade before construction. Comparing this elevation with Thornton's original scheme shows how the Capitol's silhouette changed as it was enlarged over the following decades.
