What sets this drawing apart is its inscription on the verso, which identifies it as Thornton's plan for the west elevation, so it shows the Capitol as William Thornton imagined it rather than as it was finally built. Thornton, a physician and self-taught architect, won the competition for the building's design in the early 1790s, and this elevation reflects the classical massing he proposed, with a central dome. That dome differs from the cast-iron one completed in the 1860s, a reminder of how the building changed over decades of construction. The work is ink, watercolor and graphite on paper, and a reference copy has been exhibited at the Capitol Visitor Center.
