This watercolor and ink drawing shows the south face of the United States Capitol, with the propylaea, the classical gateway structures, drawn into the scene. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the English-born architect who took over the building's design and construction after William Thornton, inscribed it "BHLatrobe 1810-11." The sheet shows how he imagined the finished complex in the years when the south wing was rising and the rest of the building remained unfinished. It is part of the Latrobe Archive at the Library of Congress.
