Drawn in ink, watercolor, and graphite, this south elevation presents the Capitol as its design was authorized to be built, and its inscription credits Benjamin Henry Latrobe as the designer and F.C. de Krafft as the draftsman, dated 1818. By that year Latrobe had left his post overseeing the building, which British forces had burned in August 1814 and which was being rebuilt in stages. The sheet preserves the architect's intentions for the south face while the legislative building was still unfinished, and it remains part of the Latrobe archive held by the Library of Congress.
