Drawn for the principal story of the Capitol's south wing, this plan records the floor that held the Senate chamber while Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the building's architect, was reworking the design between 1803 and 1814. Latrobe worked in ink, watercolor, wash and graphite, and his notations include computations that show the numerical reasoning behind the layout. The sheet is mounted on linen. The period matters because British forces burned the Capitol in 1814, and Latrobe's surviving plans are key evidence of the interiors he planned before that loss and afterward rebuilt.
