This drawing shows the courtroom in the north wing of the United States Capitol, dated January 1809 and signed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe as Surveyor of the Public Buildings. Its notes include a section of the lower gallery, and the sheet also carries computations, which suggests Latrobe was checking spans, heights, and proportions as he worked out the room. The north wing was still under construction in these years, and the courtroom was being prepared for the Supreme Court, which would meet there after the building was far enough along. Latrobe's careful plans for the room are a useful record of how the early Capitol was designed.
