This drawing shows a courtroom in the North Wing of the United States Capitol, with a plan, elevation, and section of the lower gallery, all dated January 1809. Its inscriptions identify Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the Surveyor of Public Buildings, as its author, and he was then overseeing the Capitol's unfinished construction in Washington. The sheet combines ink, watercolor wash, and graphite, and it includes handwritten computations, which show Latrobe working out structural and spatial details as the wing took shape. Such drawings reveal how the architect balanced the courtroom's function with the building's classical design, and they remain important records of the early Capitol.
