A watercolor and ink rendering of the Capitol's south face, this drawing stands out for its propylaea, the monumental gateway a Greek-style entrance that Benjamin Henry Latrobe proposed for the grounds. Latrobe, who supervised the building's design and construction, inscribed the sheet with his initials and the dates 1810 to 1811, placing it during the years he was reshaping the unfinished Capitol. The drawing belongs to his papers at the Library of Congress and reflects the early national ambition to give the young capital classical architecture on a grand scale. It has since been shown in the Capitol Visitor Center exhibition.
