What sets this sheet apart is its inscription. The verso names S. Hallet and labels the drawing as the elevation of the principal front of plan D1, which places it among the early design studies for the national Capitol. It shows the east front, the side that faced the growing city and later became the stage for presidential inaugurations. Stephen Hallet, a French-born architect, was one of several designers whose proposals were considered in the early 1790s, when Washington, D.C., was still being laid out and the Capitol's final form was far from settled. The ink, wash, and watercolor give this rendered elevation a presentation quality that distinguishes it from a plain working drawing.
