This drawing shows the east front of the United States Capitol, the side that faced the city and the approach up Capitol Hill, rendered in ink, watercolor, and wash in 1834. That was a formative decade for the building. Its central section was complete, but the wings and surrounding grounds were still taking shape, and the design of the building was being refined as Washington grew around it. A rendering like this one let officials and the public picture the finished composition before it stood in stone. Scholars reproduce such sheets in surveys of the Capitol's design, and they remain useful for reading how early American architects imagined the seat of national government.
