The east entrances to Capitol Square, drawn from the street, show the grounds of the United States Capitol as they stood in the mid-1820s, before the building's later expansions. The ink, watercolor, and graphite drawing records the iron railing that fronted the east portico, with its gates and walkways leading up to the building. Its inscription describes the entrances as seen from the street, which suggests it was made to document the approach and the boundary of the grounds rather than the building itself. Such views are valuable to historians because they capture how the Capitol was approached and enclosed in its early decades in the nation's capital.
