From an elevated vantage point, the camera looks down on the Capitol at the head of the National Mall, with the grounds and paths stretching out below the building. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1910, sold views like this to tourists and armchair travelers who wanted a record of the nation's capital. By then the Capitol's cast-iron dome, completed during the Civil War, had long been a fixture of the skyline, and the Mall was still being shaped into the open civic space planners had envisioned. The title was supplied by a cataloger rather than the photographer, so the framing and viewpoint are the best guides to what the scene shows.
