The Senate wing, the north half of the United States Capitol that houses the upper chamber, took its enlarged form in 1859 under architect Thomas U. Walter, who extended the original building. This view, made on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate sometime between 1900 and 1910, shows the stone facade during the decades when Washington was growing into a modern capital. The Detroit Publishing Company produced the negative and sold views like this to travelers and publishers across the country, so the plate shows how the Capitol appeared to ordinary visitors in the early twentieth century.
