A storeroom inside the U.S. Capitol is an unusual subject, since most photographs of the building show its public halls and exterior. This 8 by 6 inch glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's landmarks, government buildings and streets in the early twentieth century, many of them for sale as postcards and souvenirs. The record dates it to about 1919 or 1920, and the streaks and blemishes visible on the glass reflect the natural deterioration of its original coating over time.
