The President's Room, tucked off the Senate wing of the U.S. Capitol, was a working space where presidents met with lawmakers and signed bills passed at the close of congressional sessions. This view comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed Washington landmarks for visitors and publications in the early 20th century. The glass negative is dated to roughly 1916 to 1917, a period when the Capitol was a major stop for tourists. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes on the image, which come from the natural breakdown of the original negative coating.
