Tucked just off the Senate chamber inside the Capitol, the President's Room was a retreat where lawmakers and presidents could meet away from the public, and it was a traditional place for signing bills as sessions neared their close. This view is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a firm that documented Washington landmarks for visitors in the years before the First World War. The record dates it only to between 1916 and 1917, so the exact day it was taken remains uncertain, but the ornate interior would have shown tourists the richly decorated spaces of the building.
