The National Photo Company's Washington work often included interiors of foreign legations, and this glass negative shows the drawing room of the Mexican Embassy in the nation's capital, dated between 1916 and 1917. Those years were a tense period in U.S.-Mexican relations, as the Mexican Revolution played out across the border and the Wilson administration weighed questions of recognition and intervention. The date is a range drawn from similar negatives rather than a firm record, so the exact timing remains uncertain. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from the emulsion coatings deteriorating over time, a common condition in negatives of this age.
