The sitting room of the Mexican Embassy in Washington is an unusual subject, since interiors of foreign legations appear far less often than building exteriors in the National Photo Company's work. The picture dates to about 1916 or 1917, when Mexico was still in the midst of its revolution and relations with the United States were strained, so the embassy was a place where diplomacy drew close public attention. The company's photographers documented the capital's government buildings, hotels and residences for sale to the public, and this glass negative, a 1947 gift to the Library of Congress, shows the streaks and blemishes that come with aging emulsion coatings.
